Elder Moore & Elder Salinas doing practices

Well that’s really sad to hear what happened to Elder Kroon. I’ll pray for him. It is scary to see the guards around here, just standing on the corner holding pistol grip shotguns and stuff crazy.     But this week was good.  So right now i guess I’ll answer your questions mom!!!

1: The people we are teaching aren’t very many because we are having a hard time finding new investigators. But right now we are teaching Nelson who is great, he always sends us down to the corner store to buy a bottle of sprite and cookies for the lessons.  Next is Toribio Troche, he is going to be probably kicked off of our list because he won’t progress.  We ask him “what are you expecting from us and from the lessons” and always he says no no no for me it’s just that it’s just well its bienvenido(welcoming) and we ask him to read and pray and come to church and he just says va a ver(we´ll see) but idk what we are going to do with him. Lily is a lady who we met from Hermano Nappa.  It’s his girlfriend and she grew up catholic and she was a teacher at catholic Sunday school but her mom is a member and Lily has already read the book of Mormon herself a while ago.  She has come to church once and she accepts all of the baptismal questions and everything.  But there is something she is hiding and she says it’s out of her control so we are trying to get that out of her.  Last are Pedro and Sonia, the couple that need to get married.  Pedro is ready and he wants it, but Sonia is a little worried on the marriage part and on the doctrine part.  So we told her that she can know it’s true by her feelings.  I told her about the time a few weeks ago when I felt really good when we taught Oscar.  Then I said to know that this gospel is true its como una receta.
Cool.

2. The stuff I love is looking at all the stuff here, getting letters from you all, I want more!!!!!!!!!   But I like when we ask people to do things and they do it. Also when we have planned to watch the restoration movie and they don’t have a dvd player so the lesson just goes off of the spirit.

3. As for the eating part yummy.  we only get 750.000 a month so less than 200 bucks.  I live in the nicest city in Paraguay.  Encarnacion is the cleanest and most chuchi of all of Paraguay.  So that means that food here is expensive and we only have to lunch appt. On Wednesday we go to fila delgado and on Saturday we go to see abuela, vanessa, and her little girl Deborá. They usually make good food, well if abuela makes it, it isn’t very good.  But today for breakfast I had ramen. We are out of cereal milk and everything. We had no food.  So we just spent that last of our money for this month today at the store and it didn’t get us very much. But good thing Elder Boylston and Elder Kartchner were in centro(the city) so they bought us pizza. I swear we have rice like every day. we get home and put the pot on the stove let it get nice and hot, dump in a full mug of rice and double the water and drop in a chicken flavoring cube. When we have money we love to get lomitos. ballin burritos.

4. And yes i take lots of pictures, I’m going to get some developed today if I can find a place. You said mom that Asuncion would have more stuff but it’s not going to.   This place is great.  I would never live here but it’s great.

I have a microwave and we use oil everyday to fry chicken patties. I can buy eggs but people never do because the bag of flour that you buy here has everything in it salt, eggs, flour, everything, but I can buy eggs.  and yeah I still want bubble mailers. We found a post office in my area so I don’t have to wait like a week and a half for the office to send out my mail. You have to send stuff to the office but I don’t have to use the office. When I use the post office in my area it only takes 10 days for a letter to get to the U.S. so about 2 weeks to get you a letter.  I put 2 in the mail last week, one for Grandma Nette with an activity for her about the Catholics for all of you to do and send back to me and one for Saige.  Dad should get one this week, I hope.   And I have a letter for Spencer but he won’t get it for a while because I don’t have any money so send it.  So I’ll put one for Spencer and M’Kay in the same letter.

My heck, you guys start to do all the fun stuff right when I leave, go to McCall for 2 weeks! Don’t you think i would like to go with all of you. Plus there will be less people so that’s more time to ride the jet ski´s and the boat.  UGh well I guess it’s just a mile marker in the mish, one family reunion down and one more to go.

But i just finished my first change here in the mission. Everyone says that the first one and well your first area is the slowest and then 3 changes will go by and it will feel like 1 change went by. but it’s going good.  I know it’s going to be a little bit still before I’m a Spanish machine but whatever it’s just another day in Babylon!!!!!!!!! Oh and i was way disappointed today when i didn’t get my scripture cases. They should have been here by now.

So that’s about all for this week.  Nothing too exciting, and where is the letters from the Walkers and from dad???  Mom you need to get on their cases about this or tell them that the list of cool things I have planned to buy them is going to get trashed. HAHA, but really I do have some cool things planned to buy for you all. Something like jerseys which reminds me Paraguay lost the Copa America yesterday, lame. But also custom stuff with your names on them, for the brothers, some switchblades, swords, machetes, hammocks, and maybe some other stuff, but only if i start getting letters
!!!!!!

One last thing, this last week i had Maté Dulce for the first time, it’s so good. It is shaved coconut flakes into the cup, then you heat up milk and put sugar in it and you pour it over the coconut....so good. i talked about it in that letter you should get this week.

Te quire mucho

President Callan, Elder Salinas, Sister Callan

Fresh batch of GREENIES arrive in Paraguay!

Monday, July 18, 2011

Hi mom how are you?  This week started kind of weird, we didn’t really do anything because elder Moore was sick on Monday, Tuesday and part of Wednesday.  But on Friday i went to a different area with Elder Alexander.  That was cool- - it was out in the campo, I’m in the city.  We fed a monkey and it was cool.  Aubrey Spiser, has cousins and Elder Alexander is their stepbrother, so tell her that I spent a day with him. She told him I was coming to Paraguay.

So the summer is flying by for you, it is flying by for us too, well the winter is.  It’s like 50 degrees here today but in a few weeks it’s going to get colder.  This last 6 weeks went by way faster than the MTC.  The boys can have a fun time in their!  This is the last week of the change.  It sounds like all of the kids are doing good.  And you had a good anniversary.  I sent a letter in the mail last week.  We have to send it to the mission office with money and they send it off so that why it takes so long because they have to wait for all the letters to come in for the week, lucky for us we found a post office in our area so they should get their a little faster now!!!  There was a letter for you all, one for you to mail to Richard and James( they have the same letter) and there is an American stamp in there too so you don’t have to pay for it haha!  And there was a letter for Saige.

Sister Callan is going home, she has 2 weddings. One girl gets married and then the other girl the next day and a baby to be blessed, like 3 birthdays and I think 3 or 4 new grand kids.  And don’t remind me of all the fun you are going to have in McCall. I can’t wait till i get to go to that again. You will need to send me some pic of that, please actual pictures, I can’t always see the pics that you email me.  I just want a ton of them pics.  We didn’t get to go to Argentina, lame, it was a lie the whole time, it was just so that we could stop in Paraguay. We never were going to Argentina, but I see Argentina every day.  I look across the river and can see Posadas.  Huge city that looks so much more welcoming than Paraguay!!!!  Yesterday Paraguay played Brazil in some tournament that is going on.  Paraguay won which never happens against Brazil....for like 3 hours after the game people were driving around honking, blasting music, people standing on top of trucks as they are driving around and yelling, gun shots left and right. What a mess.  If they win the whole thing the country of Paraguay is going to explode.

Well Pedro y Sonia still are not married or baptized.  We planned ballin lessons for all of our 5 whole investigators and they are starting to do stuff now, nelson is progressing, Toribio Troche, Liliana, all are progressing, Oscar is not.  He is stubborn about he was already baptized and Jesus doesn’t want me to get baptized again. Don’t know if we will get back in his house.  So on P-days we walk around and I make lists of stuff I am going to buy for all yall....it will be a lot of money but I love ya so I guess I’ll buy it!!!  I’ve seen some cool swords and other things.  My apas or scripture cases should come this next Monday, I’ll send   pics of them, they are going to be ballin!!!!

Well that’s all for now, gonna go get a haircut and write some letters, Mom tell people to write me, and they can do dear elders because they are free. But I just love getting letters.....so if you could do that, thanks.

Te amo y te quiero mucho.

HA!!!!!!   Been here for a month.   Been out here for 3 months.  It is a little weird here though...the sun is down by like 5:30 and we are 4 hours ahead of you. This week has been great and its P-day again. The reason p-day is so great today is because I went to bed at 10:30 yesterday, got up at like 8:30 today and for the first time in a month I took a shower, well a hot shower.  Cleanest I have felt in a month!  Today I got a letter from Richard and from Saige.  I have a letter ready to put in the mail for you guys.
So from the email, I really wish I could have gone to the BBQ that we have every year.  And I would have loved to see grandpa get hit with the bottle rocket, I bet that whatever came out of his mouth was better...."%$·&()$%&%·"· Darn you Darrin!!! haha. And I wish I could have gone to Benjamin’s for food and then to the Melba fireworks too. AHH all we have here is soccer. When we were out in the campo on Saturday or Friday there was a partido or a soccer match Paraguay vs. Brazil so that means nobody is going to answer their doors, all of the stores are closed, so it’s hard to do anything....but while we were out in the campo, the closest thing I will get to fireworks is when Paraguay scores a goal and them someone empties a clip from their gun because they are so excited!!!! The whole campo starts roaring and then bang bang bang, gun shots for excitement. . It sounds like you all had a good time on the trek, I don’t know if I was supposed to look at the family blog but I did and Grants got a nice soul stare going on for that girl he was draggin across the river.....wow wow wee wow, very nice!!!
We didn’t have the baptism I told you about for the 9th.  They are scared and the lady Sonia, she thinks we charge for baptisms and that is how we pay for our food and house and stuff. But Vanessa told her no and got her excited so we went over there to teach her and her husband Pedro, and they had company, so all we did was share a scripture because you don’t ask all the deep questions when they have friends over.  So maybe tomorrow we can get them excited.!!!!  Then we have another lady her name is Lilliana and she is Hermano Nappas girlfriend and we have been teaching her with Hermano Nappa and she came to church so she is progressing.  The other one who we work really hard with is Oscar Mencinas, he goes to a catholic church and always says he was baptized the way he should have been and he says “well Jesus doesn’t want me to be baptized again”, and we say how do you know, have you asked. Then he just changes the subject.   All my life I would hear people say oh man, wow the spirit is so strong here, I would always say what spirit, I don’t feel anything. I would pray about things and read my book of Mormon but still never felt anything, and while I was teaching about the plan of salvation I felt it.  It’s winter here and all the ´´houses´´ are made of cement with no insulation so they are cold, its only 45-50 degrees and with humidity its way colder, I was freezing in this guys house and right in the middle of that I could feel that warm feeling everyone talks about. And I thought of you all and some others who you can probably guess and it just felt good. Another one who if we could we would do like Jesus taught in the New Testament and dust our shoes off on him, he would be cursed forever, but it doesn’t really work that way anymore. Now they just have to come to their judgment when Jesus asks, are these not the two missionaries I sent you? What’s he gonna do then? OOOPS for him!!!  We went once and it was bad because he always is an unbeliever and says crap about the church and stuff....but we looked up a bunch of scriptures to share with him we were doing that with him and his mom. His mom was saying oh they never taught the gentiles bla bla bla and we read the scripture that says it’s for the gentiles and we read it again and she changed the subject, then when we would catch her with something she would say, well the bible has been translated so many times you can’t even know if it’s true. Then when Juaquine finally showed up we started to talk with him....and then at the end he was like I have 20 times more knowledge than you do about that stupid book than you do (talking about the bible) and then he said I don’t have money problems, I don’t have marriage problems (probably cuz he isn’t married) I don’t have anything bad in my life why do I need faith, I’m perfect!!! Then he started to say oh and the old guys in your church who think they are prophets, Elder Moore was about to punch him....we just got up and left, we didn’t even say permiso or anything to leave we just did.
The last one is Nelson, he is awesome, he just needs to grasp one little thing of what we have taught him, just a little testimony of something and then he will work towards all of it, we are going to watch the José Smith profeta de la Restauración with him.
So in the letter I am going to sent you today or tomorrow, won’t get into the mail for like 3 to 4 days until the office has all the letters and then they will make one trip to the post office, but it asks for a few things and one of those is a bubble mailer so I can send home my camera card, I’m not putting that in a little envelope, it will break or get jacked so if yall want pics and I know you do, I need some of them, I will keep looking but I haven’t seen any of them here in humble little Paraguay!!!
That’s about it for this week. When Elder Moore goes home after the next change I will have been out here for 6 months and then I will get to skype you for Christmas and then the time will start to go by even faster for you mom.  I sure love all of you, thanks for everything!!!

More Yummy Food!

Well this week went by fast. Love that its p day. Thanks for all the pics and letters. Mom I got your letter today in the mail. That means it got here last week sometime. Here are a bunch of pics, it’s taking really long to load them so the email won’t be as long this week. Not much has really happened. Did a lot of walking, and we have taught not very many lessons this week. We were in Asuncion for 2 days where I saw Elder Lamb, Heiner, and the others. He had his brass knucks, and he is getting some for me too haha and a switchblade. Watchout! Last night we went to San Miguel and it’s like an hour walk out there, the less active members live there, and that’s why they are less active, well really it’s because they are really lazy and don’t want to walk, but it is very cold here right now. The good thing is that winter here only lasts for like 2 months. Then it will get up to 40 C or for you in America 104 or higher.

So everyone here that we teach always tries to bash on us and prove us wrong, but then we get out the bible, their pride and joy. They are all just so stubborn. Sorry grandma, but it’s usually the Catholics and the people who just don’t believe in Jesus at all.  So last night when we got home from San Miguel we went over to see Vanessa and abuela and her little girl. We got there and abuela was brewin up something on the stove, and she was stirring it with a stick, like a fence board with slivers all over it. Then she said to Elder Moore, are you gonna eat this, you better cuz it you don’t I’m gonna plaster you with it. Then she asked him, is he going to eat it (referring to me) and she said ahh who cares, he´s in Paraguay, he´s gonna learn to eat it and like it.  It was nasty. It was like chewing on sand and dirt. If you can imagine this, it was hard and sort of soggy at the same time. Barf.

I know a lot of Guaraní....that’s how we do our contacts. In Guaraní. My comp can understand and speak it - - well not that good, but that’s what I’m gonna work on in like 2 months when I can speak Spanish like a boss!!!

Then we were walking to see the elders quorum pres, he hasn’t come to church in like a month. On the way to his house is right past a cemetery. They don’t burry the dead here. They all have their own shack that’s like 12x12. It has a door and windows and it looks like a small town.  It has old fashioned light poles and street signs. Just creepy!

Well sorry it was short, I’m going to go order my scripture cases finally. If you all want some, send me some money and what you want on them. They are 120mil each. Or you can get one quad. I don’t know how much the quad is but the 2 separate area about 50 bucks.

Love you all.

Elder Salinas

NOTE:  ***NONE of the pictures he sent came through today***
